First of all, I am so behind on posting. I have been busy gathering papers for people that have been absent that I've neglected my posting assignments on my blog. If you haven't heard, there are a lot of students absent right now on the 8A team so make sure your students are taking Vitamin C every morning. :)

Prompt for On-Demand Speech

Situation 40: The discipline committee of our school is meeting to revise the student handbook for next year. Among the topics to be discussed are: hats, CD players, parking passes, and students skipping/leaving for lunch.

Task 40: Choose one rule from the student handbook which students believe either should be revised or removed. Write a speech to the discipline committee to discuss your reasons for changing or keeping one current school rule as it is.

Five Ways to Combine Sentences

1. Using a conjunction (and, but, or)

*Whenever you combine sentences using and, but or or, make sure you remember to take out the period and put a comma.

Ex: They will hike in Rocky Mountain National Park and pitch their tents in Hidden Valley.

2. Inserting a word

Ex without a change:

Louis Armstrong was a famous musician. He was a jazz musician.

Louis Armstrong was a famous jazz musician.

Ex with a change:

Louis Armstrong was an easygoing person. He was a friend to many people.

Louis Armstrong was an easygoing, friendly person.

3. Inserting an adverb, adjective or noun clause.

An adjective clause describes a noun. These clauses often begin with that, who, whose, which, and whom.

Ex: Our neighbors, who were on vacation, went on a cross-country bicycle tour.

An adverb clause describes a verb. These clauses most often begin with time or place words such as: after, although, as, as if, as soon as, because, if, so that, than, unless, until, when, where, wherever, whether, while.

Ex: I like to travel whenever I get the opportunity.

Noun clauses take the place of a noun in a sentence. You will often need to introduce a noun clause with the following words: who, whom, which, what, when, where, why, how, that.

Ex: Our teacher explained to us that we must do our homework.

4. Inserting an appositive phrase.

An appositive is a noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to rename or explain it.

Ex: Jack London, an American novelist, journalist, and adventurer, lived from 1876 to 1916.

5. Inserting a prepositional phrase.

A prepositional phrase shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. “Anything that can be done to a mountain”

Paul borrowed a pencil from his friend and used it to take his test in math class.

Some common prepositions include: about, across, after, along, around, at, below, between, by, down, during, for, from, in front of, near, off, on, over, past, to, under, up, with…
